Let a New Wood Splitter Do the Hard Grind of Splitting Logs For You For Next Winter

When it comes to chopping those thousands of wood logs you have three main options. You can spend many back-breaking days doing the chore yourself, you can pay somebody else to do it for you, or you can invest in a log splitter, or wood splitter as they are often called.

Of these options, the most pain free option is to buy a wood splitter. A splitter makes use of a hydraulic rod to create enough pressure to split wood. To put it simply, the rod pushes the log over a stationary blade, thereby chopping it into two pieces.

Wood splitters can be driven by a gas engine, by electricity, or some can be driven by hand, and each option has its advantages and disadvantages. A lot of gas models have wheels so they can be transported to out-of-the-way places and the splitting can be done on site. Electrical wood splitters are ideal for home use and can even be used indoors.

A more recent development is the hand wood splitter. These are most often powered by foot or hand using levers and, while there is some graft involved, it is a far sight easier than using an axe or a maul.

The weight generated by log splitters can range from about 10 tons to 25 tons. Ten tons is usually enough for home use. Bigger wood splitters are usually used for commercial use and are often powered by, and attached to the rear of, tractors.

As with any type of hydraulic machinery, wood splitters can cause serious injuries if misused so certain safety precautions must be taken during their use. Log splitters should only be utilized by grown ups and people should not stand in close proximity while they are being used.

However, log splitters can save weeks of hard graft with an axe, a hammer and a maul, and with a few basic precautions can make an invaluable tool.

In light of the amount of time and work they can save, wood splitters are well worth the investment. A quality manual splitter can be purchased for about two hundred dollars, while small electric wood splitters start in the region of $300. For a full-size gas-powered log splitter with wheels you could expect to spend from thirteen hundred dollars.

Log splitters are for sale in many stores online and on main street. If you simply need enough wood split to heat your home for the winter then you should not need anything too pricey. That said, if you have a lot of logs to split, then a quality gas-powered unit could be the right option for you.
